Safety First: Why Performance Starts with People

Some professional values stay with you for life.
When I joined the renewable energy industry in 2013, I understood very quickly that safety was not simply a set of procedures. It was a way of working — a mindset shared by everyone, from leadership to the field teams on site.
I had the privilege of starting out in a company with a strong international footprint and, above all, a deeply rooted HSE culture. Looking back, I realize how profoundly those early years shaped the professional I have become.
Excellence is built, not inherited
The people I worked alongside understood something that has stayed with me ever since: operational excellence never happens by chance. It is built, day after day, through discipline, accountability and genuine care for people.
Over the years the technology has evolved, projects have grown larger and more complex, and the pace has accelerated. That single principle has never changed.
Safety is far more than compliance
Too often, safety is reduced to compliance or paperwork — a folder to complete, an audit to pass. In reality it is something much more alive.
It is the confidence to speak up when something doesn't feel right, whatever your role or seniority. It is anticipating risks before they turn into incidents, rather than explaining them afterwards. It is making decisions with people in mind, not only assets and numbers.
A strong safety culture is not measured by the thickness of a manual. It is measured by what teams actually do onsite/field.
Protecting people and protecting assets are the same effort
In renewable energy, protecting people and protecting assets go hand in hand. One cannot exist without the other.
A site where teams feel safe, heard and responsible is also a site that runs more reliably. Fewer incidents mean fewer unplanned stoppages, better-maintained equipment and more stable production. Care for people and operational performance are not in tension — they reinforce each other.
This is why I keep the same mindset today, whether I am supporting developers, investors or asset owners. Operational performance is never only a matter of availability, production or KPIs. It also depends on the culture that exists behind every project.
The strongest organisations
The strongest organisations are not necessarily those with the most advanced technology. They are the ones where safety is shared, understood and embraced by everyone — from the boardroom to the base of the tower.
Technology can be bought. A culture has to be built.
Because performance starts with people
Looking back, I am grateful to the people who helped shape this mindset early in my career. They taught me that behind every KPI, every availability figure and every production curve, there are people who make performance possible.
Some professional lessons fade with time. This one never did.
Because performance always starts with people.
